The Saas Valley

The "Pearl of the Alps" is also what the Free Holiday Republic of Saas-Fee is called, and there are many reasons for that!

The car-free, family-friendly village with its famous, reliable snow and sheer endless sunshine, lies at 1,800 m.a.s.l. - at the foot of Switzerland's highest mountain - and offers its (free) citizens a paradisiacal programme 365 days a year.

In summer there are countless excursion destinations for young and old, numerous unique sports and adventure opportunities, around 350 km of wonderful hiking and theme trails and, last but not least, the cuddliest inhabitants of the Free Holiday Republic: the tame marmots!

With its snow-sure, varied pistes, cross-country ski runs and toboggan runs, dreamy winter hiking trails and many proverbial "wicked" winter events, the Free Holiday Republic of Saas-Fee is a Mecca for winter (sports) fans and all those who want to become one.

Year-round attractions such as the highest revolving restaurant and the largest ice grotto in the world also provide exciting variety.

Saas-Grund

Saas-Grund

Situated at the heart of the Free Republic of Holidays Saas-Fee and with a variety of scenic trails, Saas-Grund is a hiker’s paradise. The village is the starting point for the famous “Eighteen 4,000 metre peaks” trail, and the Almagelleralp and Gspon high Alpine trails. The Hohsaas (3,200 m a.s.l.) has one of the best views of the 18 mountain giants of the Saas Valley.

In winter, visitors to Saas-Grund can enjoy sunshine, reliable snow cover and an awe-inspiring view across the eighteen 4,000 metre peaks. And with its popular ice rink and one of the region’s longest sledging runs (over 11 km), Saas-Grund guarantees winter fun for all!

Saas-Almagell

Saas-Almagell

Saas-Almagell is the southernmost village of the Free Republic of Holidays Saas-Fee. This idyllic spot is particularly popular among hiking fans in summer, with its picturesque side valleys, the Suonen Trail to Saas-Grund, the Adventure Trail from Furggstalden to the Almagelleralp, and the narrow Valais migration routes to Italy over the mystic Monte Moro and Antrona passes.

In winter, Saas-Almagell’s wide slopes and beautiful cross-country ski trails make it ideal for families. For even more fun in the snow, visitors can try out the fantastic ice rink, cool sledging slopes and gorgeous winter hiking trails.

Saas-Balen

Saas-Balen

The charming little mountain village of Saas-Balen is situated at the entrance to the Free Republic of Holidays Saas-Fee and is particularly popular with those who love getting out into the country. On your way along one of the many scenic hiking trails, let your mind wander as you listen to the sounds of nature, then take a break and dip your feet into a crystal-clear mountain stream. Cheese enthusiasts should not miss out on a tasty trip up to the dairy on Europe’s highest Alpine pastures, on the Hoferalp. Art and architecture fans also love the village for its late-baroque round church, which is unique in Switzerland.

Winter is a relaxed and easy-going affair, with ski lifts that can carry even the smallest skiers up to the slopes. The natural ice rink draws ice-skaters who want to try a different kind of “stage”, and those who like exploring can try skiing down the valley from Saas-Grund to Saas-Balen.
